Bio :: Brief Version

I wear a lot of hats—figuratively and literally.

As an independent musician, I do it all—songwriting, recording, production, mixing, mastering, graphic design, social media, publicity, web development, loading in, loading out, and "mailroom" duty. My music has been featured in publications like Indy Week and Chapelboro, highlighted in Chapelboro's "Top 50 Songs of 2024", played across the state from WKNC to WOVV, and showcased in a live interview and performance on WCHL. It blends folk, blues, rock, philosophy, religious/Tolkien/classical mythologies, and everyday life into something deeply personal, unique, yet rooted in tradition.

I come from a lot of places, though none where I could fully be myself. Growing up in small towns across the East Coast, I learned what it means to be part of a marginalized community without an actual community. Music became my refuge—a connection to something bigger than myself, while also felt deeply, personally within myself.

Beyond music, I’ve led teams of up to 15 engineers designing up to $600 million biopharmaceutical projects, and I worked on COVID-19 vaccine production at the height of the pandemic—a genuinely honorable experience that changed my perspective on service and impact. That led me to FM radio DJing, where I hosted and curated North Carolina music on WCOM and WOVV, amplifying underrepresented voices.

This portfolio showcases my work across music, DJing, writing, and visual storytelling. At the heart of it all, I just want to make meaningful things, and to make things meaningful—and help others do the same. If that sounds good to you, let's chat!

I have included two references.

One was written by a fellow chemical engineering colleague and close friend who, like myself, also operates in the biomanufacturing and pharmaceutical industries.

The second reference is from a dear friend who operates in creative fields.

“The first album from Radio Haw looks up at the likes of Dylan and Hiss Golden Messenger, and, impressively, isn’t crushed by the comparisons.”
- INDY WEEK

“Radio Haw’s ‘Counsel of Serpents Conjures Its Folk Music Forebears -  The debut full-length from Pittsboro musician Matt Gray’s musical project, Radio Haw, showcases a musician finding his way forward.”
- Jordan Lawrence (for INDY WEEK )

“ When it comes to music discovery, I always find myself searching for artists that are willing to bring listeners into their world. I yearn for artists that are looking to push the boundaries lyrically & sonically. Because of that, I find myself searching for disruptors that refuse to align with the genre norms. Although it’s often hard finding these artists, it feels like I hit the lottery when I do. This week, I came across a diamond in the rough called Radio Haw. Radio Haw is the music project of North Carolina-based artist Matt Gray. With him being from my home state, I was impressed by his musical ability and lyrical prowess. Radio Haw is raw, captivating, and one of my favorite finds.”

Ah, the radio - the one-time powerful distributor of popular taste, superseded by an even more powerful league of streaming services - has always been, and hopefully always will continue to be, the only truly free form of media. All you need is to swing by a thrift shop and a few bucks later, you have access to voices around the world, but more importantly from your community (now usually via college, community, and other non-comm formats who do not have their playlists assigned from on high).

I LOVED my time (a year and a half) in which I put underrepresented music from the North Carolina music community in the ears of the North Carolina community at large, from Ocracoke’s WOVV to Carrboro’s WCOM.  Click the link to check out some recordings of the show (dubbed The Wicked Track as a nod to the lyrics of Hiss Golden Messenger song, “Jesus Shot Me In The Head”), as well as some mixtapes done on the side.

I had the great opportunity, through my work with radio stations as well as my own music project, to create posters distributed all over the Triangle as well as some posters intended for posting on social media sites. Click the link to see some.

I photographed and edited each of the background images you see on this site. If you’d like to see more photos, check out the gallery link. It’s loaded with abstract work, landscapes, concert photos, artsy experiments, and some other cool images:

In addition to being an effective communicator via regular channels like email and presentations, I generally consider writing in any format to be a strength. I have included some samples to convey my effectiveness and creativity with the written word.
